A 90km-long arctic mountain range, the Lyngen Alps on the edge of northern Europe are a paradise for ski touring enthusiasts. With Jiekkevarre, its highest peak reaching an altitude of 1883 metres, the massif is a succession of glaciers, richly wooded valleys and narrow fjord inlets... So, in addition to the pleasure of skiing you can also enjoy the unique experience of ending your descents on the water’s edge... we then can embark for the night in search of the best spots, marvelling at the fabulous spectacle of the Northern Lights.
This sailing and ski touring trip from fjord to fjord in Norway, between sea and mountains, skis on and head in the stars, will enchant you and leave you with unforgettable memories.

Your trip day to day

From Saturday to Saturday : skiing and sailing in the fjords in search of the best spots depending on the conditions.

Each day, after a hearty breakfast, we board the zodiac. The skipper drops us off on land with our ski equipment and a hearty picnic. The ascents (between 800 and 1200 m ascents) start and return at sea level. The terrain offers a varied choice of orientations and degrees of slope to suit the level and expectations of skiers.
We may sometimes make crossings with a different pick-up point from the drop-off point.
Back on board our floating refuge, a snack will be waiting for you before resuming navigation to the next anchorage.
Please note that in addition to snow and weather conditions, we will also be dependent on sailing conditions: some drop-offs and pick-ups may not be possible depending on wind and waves. Your guide and the captain will work together to ensure your safety.
In the middle of the afternoon, back on board, you can make the most of the fishing gear to enhance the evening meal... or have a little snap in your cabin or even enjoy a reading break in the lounge.

Overnight accommodation and evening meal on board.

High mountain : special warning

Ski touring is dependent on different factors that we can sometimes neither anticipate nor control; we may therefore have to modify the programme of our high mountain holidays before or during the stay for various reasons:

  • if the weather and/or snow conditions make it impossible to carry out the planned programme and/or
  • if there is a delay in the opening or early closure of a ski lift or refuge

In these cases, we will offer you an alternative programme, sometimes on the day of departure, which you may not refuse.

Ski touring, as all mountain activities have some level of risk particularly of avalanche or injury in the event of a fall.
To reduce the hazards that they are exposed to skiers must follow the safety instructions given by the instructor.

One of the main risks during a ski touring and sailing holiday in Norway is a participant falling into the water. As the water temperature is 4°C, we ask you to be particularly vigilant when transferring to land in the zodiac and when walking on the deck of the boat. Lifejackets are compulsory and are provided by the skipper.

Health condition

Don’t forget to take your European health insurance card and your treatment if you need one.

Skills and stamina level

To take part in this programme, you need to be able to ski in all types of snow, especially powder snow. You need to have a good level of fitness to get the most out of the outings, even if the altitude differences and the altitude of the summits are modest.

Formalités et Us et coutume

Customs

Valid passport or national identity card required- please note that the Norwegian authorities don’t recognised the extension of the validity of identity cards that expire 5 years after their expiry date. These are national identity cards (CNI) issued to adults between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013 and considered by the French authorities to be valid for 5 years after the expiry date shown on the back.

Guiding

By state-certified mountain guides or trainees mountain guides (aspirant guides) from the Roc Écrins team. They will be in permanent radio contact with the boat. A computer will be on board to check the weather and snow and avalanche bulletins.

*A trainee mountain guide is a guide in training who is authorised to work and supervise climbs from their third year of training. They are not beginners, as it takes several years of practice and training to build up a list of routes and have the experience and technical level required to enter the mountain guide training course.

Transport and carbon footprint

Transport

Flights are not included in the package to let everyone free to organise their own itinerary to the meeting point.

Depending on the date of purchase, you should expect to pay between €400 and €650 for a return ticket from Paris to Tromsö, including ski luggage. In all cases, your flight will include at least one stopover, and we strongly advise you to buy your entire itinerary with the same company and in a single payment, so that if there is a problem on one of the routes, the company’s insurance can cover it.

We strongly advise you to take out cancellation and baggage loss insurance when you buy your ticket. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

Getting to the meeting point:

  • International flights to Oslo: many airlines serve the city from Paris, Geneva, Brussels, Lyon, Marseille, Nice and Turin.
  • Domestic flights from Oslo or Bergen to Tromsö

Please note: you should also bring a ski pass for each flight.
To avoid any additional baggage costs, we recommend that you buy a ski bag on wheels that can hold all your belongings. Be careful with the weight: maximum to 20 to 23 kg depending on the airline. In our experience, it’s no problem to stay under 23 kg with your ski and mountain equipment, not forgetting a few good bottles to liven up your aperitifs on the boat!

Carbon footprint of the stay

That’s the CO2 produced by our travels during your stay!

For information:

  • Paris - Oslo - Tromso (return) :
    760kg CO2/person
  • Marseille - Oslo - Tromso (return) :
